Joy Buolamwini began her computer science studies at Georgia Tech, where she got a bachelor's degree. After that, she moved on to get a master's at Oxford, and then MIT. While doing research in a lab at MIT, she discovered that AI programs have trouble identifying people, specifically women, with dark skin. Since then, she has been working as a Poet of Code to change the discrimination in this programming. To do so, in 2016, she founded the Algorithmic Justice League, which helps explain to people why this is a prominent issue. After that, she continued writing to further explain the bias that she was seeing, and these articles have been in places like the Time Magazine. She has also shared her research through TED talks and art. Every day, she continues to advocate for racial justice within the programming of artificial intelligence. In addition to her work with AI, she also went to Zambia, to help promote the use of technology for kids. Her passion and devotion of computer science have helped her make a huge difference in the field, through her stories and her work.
